Twelve-year-old Maia Gough stepped onto the *Britainās Got Talent* stage already fighting.
The young singer from Skewen was battling tonsillitis. Most people would have stayed home. Maia chose to sing one of Whitney Houstonās hardest songs instead.
Her performance of āI Didnāt Know My Own Strengthā was powerful, controlled, and full of heart. The judges loved it. The viewers at home, however, did not send her through.

Despite being unwell and having limited rehearsal time, Maia delivered a big, emotional vocal. She hit the demanding notes with impressive control and kept a clear Welsh lilt in her voice that Simon Cowell especially appreciated.

āYou got tonsillitis and you decide to sing one of the hardest Whitney songs. That takes guts and it worked. I liked the fact that I could actually hear you and I could hear the Welsh lilt. The control was terrific!ā

āYou are such a pro, you wouldnāt know you didnāt have many rehearsals. You hit those big notes. For your age it is so impressive. You have got it.ā
Amanda Holden told her:
āI donāt think you do know your own strength. You are an ordinary little girl, with an ordinary family and then something extraordinary comes out of your mouth when you sing.ā
David Walliams summed it up simply:
āWow! Incredible. You have such a big voice for such a young girl. You did everyone in Wales proud. I am sure everyone is rooting for you.ā
Who Advanced Instead
While Maiaās performance impressed the panel, the public vote decided differently.
Singer Isaac Waddington won the public vote and went straight through to the final. Four-piece family act The Neales also advanced.
They will join North Wales choir Cor Glanaethwy, who had already been sent through to the final in the previous results show.
