Singing Cop Steals Hearts on ‘AGT’ with Soulful Serenade to His Wife
A Virginia police officer brought the America’s Got Talent judges to tears—and setting major couple goals—with a heartfelt, soulful audition dedicated entirely to his wife.
“My wife is the reason that I’m here today. She tells me to follow my dream,” Richmond Police Officer Mervin Mayo declared before stepping onto the stage in full dress uniform. “And music is in me—yeah, it’s in me.”
From Troubled Youth to Community Hero
When he isn’t singing, Officer Mayo works as a school resource officer in Richmond, Virginia, mentoring at-risk youth to keep them off the streets. The mission is deeply personal for Mayo, who credits a mentor with saving his own life during a tough childhood.
“I grew up in a housing project in Richmond… An officer named Curtis Simmons kind of took me under his wing because I was a little mischievous growing up, and he kept me safe. I’m alive today because he kept me out of it… I’ve seen more murders as a child than I have as a police officer.”
Today, Mayo and his wife, Mechelle—a director of school counseling—work side by side serving their local community. Music serves as Mayo’s primary coping mechanism to unwind from the daily stresses of his job.
A Romantic Performance That Stunned the Judges
Sitting down at the keyboard, Mayo delivered a stunning, emotional cover of Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud,” constantly shooting affectionate glances toward his wife waiting in the wings.
